On Wednesday after work, Sophie picked Comet up from the clinic and drove home to prepare for Petey’s visit tonight. Sophie was glad that Trisha had agreed to the visit. Sophie took Petey once a month and Janet helped out too but a single mom who worked two jobs could never get too much help.

Trisha was only running errands tonight but at least she was on her own for a couple of hours. Who knew? Maybe Trisha would meet a guy tonight, sparks would fly, and she’d find herself just as happy as Sophie was lately.

Sophie smiled to herself as she topped off Comet’s water bowl and gave him some extra love. “You have a friend coming over this afternoon,” she said. She was pretty sure that Comet had no idea what she was saying but he seemed pretty excited at the tone of her voice. He lapped up some water and then danced around her feet for a few moments. “Want to go outside?” she asked.

Comet immediately headed toward the back door. Such a smart dog.

She let him out and then turned toward the sound of her doorbell. Chase was coming over right after work, which would be anytime now. She hoped he got here first because she wouldn’t mind sneaking in a few kisses before they had a tiny audience with them.

She opened the door and felt a soft zing in her chest. That zing was love. “Petey isn’t here yet.”

They shared a look that said Chase had been hoping that was the case. He stepped inside, closed the door behind him, and pulled her into his arms. One kiss is all they got in before the doorbell rang again.

Sophie looked up at Chase, who now looked like he was going into battle. She placed a hand on his arm. “He’s a seven-year-old boy. He’ll come around.”

Chase nodded but he didn’t look convinced. His relationship with Petey meant a lot to him. So it also meant a lot to Sophie. And before the night was over, she was determined to help her two favorite guys reconnect.

She opened the door and welcomed Trisha and Petey inside.

“I have my cell phone on me, of course,” Trisha said. “I won’t be far. If you need anything at all, just call. I can be back in five minutes.”

Sophie pointed to the door again. “You have to stay gone for at least two hours. That’s my condition. We’ll be fine.” She hugged Petey into her side. “Right, Petey?”

The boy glanced over at Chase with a glum expression. “I guess.”

Sophie offered Trisha a reassuring smile. She knew Trisha wasn’t worried about her babysitting ability. Petey was just having a hard time these days. Trisha was more likely concerned about his behavior tonight. “I’ll call if we need you,” Sophie relented. “I promise.”

Trisha looked at Chase now, her expression clearly reading Good luck. Then she waved and headed back out the door.

“All right.” Sophie turned to look between Petey and Chase. “You’re stuck with us for two hours.
